Howe admits Champions League is ‘close’ for Newcastle

Eddie Howe has admitted that Champions League qualification is ‘close’ for Newcastle after the club’s 4-1 win over Brighton.

Newcastle thrashed Brighton at St James’ Park to move within one win of securing a place in the Champions League next season, with the Magpies closing in on a return to Europe’s elite for the first time in two decades.

Howe’s side take on Leicester in the Premier League on Monday night and can confirm qualification for the competition with three points against the Foxes.

Howe admits that Champions League football is ‘close’ for his side, but insisted Newcastle are not looking past Leicester. He refused to discuss the prospect of taking on Europe’s best until qualification has been assured.

“The Champions League is so close, but so far away as well,” Howe said following the win over Brighton, as per the BBC.

“We will enjoy tonight but we are focused on our next match,” said Howe, who has been reluctant to discuss his side’s top-four chances.

“We were just pleased with the performance, to beat a side of their quality. We are not looking too far ahead.

“When it’s done, I’ll talk about it for fun if you want.”
