Man United look to ‘steal a march’ on rivals with Mason Mount bid

Manchester United want to sign Mason Mount this summer and have made an early approach for the Chelsea midfielder to ‘steal a march’ on rival sides.

Mount is expected to leave Chelsea this summer after failing to agree a new deal in west London, with the England international set to enter the final year of his contract at the end of the season.

Contract talks with the Blues broke down earlier this season after Mount’s representatives felt the midfielder was undervalued in negotiations, particularly given the club’s recent investment in new signings.

Mount was named as Chelsea’s Player of the Season in 2020/21 and 2021/22 and has made 195 appearances in all competitions since progressing from the academy.

Liverpool and Arsenal are understood to be interested in signing Mount, but the Daily Mail are reporting that Manchester United are set to launch a £55m move for the 24-year-old.

Erik ten Hag has made the signing of the midfielder a ‘priority’ and wants to wrap up a deal early in the summer transfer window.

Chelsea are set to name Mauricio Pochettino as the club’s head coach ahead of next season and the Argentine wants to retain the midfielder. However, Chelsea run the risk of losing Mount on a free transfer in 2024 if a new contract is not agreed.
