Phew! Boost for Liverpool fans Van Dijk insists he’s ‘fine’ after injury scare

Virgil van Dijk has insisted he is ‘fine’ after giving Liverpool fans an injury scare whilst on international duty.

Liverpool had to make do without their influential defender for the majority of the 2020/21 campaign after he suffered a season-ending knee injury in last October’s Merseyside derby at Goodison Park, an injury which saw him also miss out on this summer’s Euros.

He did however recover to feature in pre-season, and has gone on to play a full 90 minutes in each of the Reds opening three Premier League games, the defender quickly getting back up to the speed as the club have enjoyed an unbeaten start to the campaign and have conceded just once.

However, onlooking Liverpool fans will have been concerned to see the robust defender holding his ankle and limping off the field as the Netherlands beat Turkey 6-1 on Tuesday evening, following a collision with a Turkish defender.

Speaking after the game though, Van Dijk allayed any concerns of a serious injury, saying he is ‘already over it’.

“I’m fine, luckily. I’m already over it,” he said. “Maybe because I am so big, they think I am acting, because when I go down, it goes in quite a slow way.”

Reds fans will be hopeful of no reaction to the knock in the coming days as they face a potentially tricky away trip across the Pennines to face Marcelo Bielsa’s Leeds United at the weekend.
