Tottenham’s summer signing of Cristian Romero is under investigation as part of a probe into Juventus’ financial dealings.
The north London side completed the signing of the Argentina international during the summer transfer window, with Romero moving to the Premier League on the same day as a permanent move from Juventus to Atalanta was completed.
The 23-year-old has spent the previous campaign on loan at Atalanta with a £13.5m fee agreed between the clubs as part of the agreement.
Romero’s deal has attracted attention given the huge profit Atalanta are set to make within a single season, with the defender having never played for Juventus during two seasons at the club.
Signed from Genoa for a fee of £22m in 2019, he spent the following two seasons out on loan at Genoa and Atalanta respectively, before an agreement for a permanent deal was reached with the latter.
On the same day as his permanent arrival at Atalanta, Romero was loaned to Tottenham with the north Londoners possessing an option to buy for £47m – the Bergamo based side’s huge profit said today have ‘raised eyebrows’.
There is no suggestion, however, that Spurs have been involved in any wrongdoing over the Romero transfer.
Juventus are being investigated over potential financial fraud with 42 transfers – including the deal for Romero – currently forming part of the probe, with the Mail reporting that Spurs’ sporting director, Fabio Paratici, is one of six past and present Juventus’ officials under investigation.
Swap deals involving the exits of Joao Cancelo and Miralem Pjanic to Manchester City and Barcelona respectively are also being investigated and the club’s offices in Turin and Milan were raided last week, with evidence over transfer dealings taken.
