John Terry is set to return to Chelsea after failing to secure a managerial role since leaving Aston Villa.
Terry has been without a club since leaving his role as assistant manager at Aston Villa in July, having spent three seasons on the coaching staff at Villa Park after finishing his playing career with the Midlands club.
The former England captain had been hopeful of landing a first senior managerial position and has registered interest in various positions across the Premier League and Championship, but has failed to attract offers from clubs that match his own levels of ambition.
The Athletic are reporting that Terry will now return to Chelsea in a role that focuses on youth development, though his position will be on a part-time basis as he continues to seek managerial opportunities.
Terry came through the academy system at Chelsea and spent 19 years as a first-team player at Stamford Bridge, becoming the west London side’s most successful ever captain after winning 15 major honours.
His return is viewed as beneficial to all parties at this stage of Terry’s coaching career, providing the 41-year-old with a chance to continue his development as he awaits the right senior opportunity.
Terry acknowledges that securing a Premier League position will be ‘incredibly difficult’ at this stage of his career, but is hopeful Championship interest can materialise.
