Sevilla insist Newcastle target Diego Carlos is not leaving this month

Sevilla have insisted that Diego Carlos will not be leaving this month, despite interest from Newcastle.

Newcastle made an offer for the centre-back earlier in the window, but the Magpies’ £30m bid for Carlos fell below Sevilla’s valuation of the defender.

There had also been approaches from an unnamed London-based Premier League side and an Italian side for the defender, with reports earlier this week suggesting that Sevilla were holding out for around £37m.

The Brazilian had been keen on a move to the Premier League and submitted a transfer request, though a move has failed to materialise with Sevilla turning down Newcastle’s interest and unable to find a replacement.

The club’s sporting director, Monchi, has insisted there will be no movement before the transfer window’s deadline on Monday but believes a summer deal could be revisited.

“The Newcastle offer was a good offer, a respectable offer. I have to say that,” he told the i.

“But the offer, our board and management team thought it wasn’t enough. It’s true that maybe it wasn’t the right time. It’s a difficult market to find a replacement for a player like Diego Carlos.

“It’s a market that takes place over a very short period of time. Maybe if that offer comes along in the summer then things might have changed.

“The offer was a very good offer, a very respectable offer but not at the best possible time.”

Monchi says that Carlos remains ‘happy’ at Sevilla despite his desire to leave, with the Spanish side currently second in La Liga and chasing a first league title since 1946.

“I was talking to Diego this morning and he’s happy. At the end of the day he’s staying here at his club, a club that really wanted him.

“If he was really angry then maybe he would have changed his opinion but he seems happy.”
