Spurs ‘fear’ Conte will walk away

Tottenham are fearful that Antonio Conte could walk away from the club at the end of the season.

The north Londoners have lost four of their past five fixtures in the Premier League, a run of results which leaves Spurs eighth and facing a difficult task to secure Champions League football.

Conte was critical of the side following the 1-0 defeat to Burnley in midweek, raising the prospect of him leaving Spurs should results not improve.

“I came here to help the club and if the problem could be the coach I’m ready to go, no problem,” he said after the defeat by Burnley.

“I am too honest to close my eyes and continue in this way, and to take my salary, but at this moment it is not right. I have to talk to the club. We lost four games in the last five games.

“The players are always the same, the club has changed the coaches, but the players are always the same and the results don’t change.”

The Times are reporting that Spurs do not expect Conte to leave before the end of the season, but there are concerns among the hierarchy that he could quit in the summer should results not improve.

The Italian was viewed as a marquee appointment following his arrival in November and his exit would be a huge blow to Spurs, who endured a frustrating search for a new manager before the ill-fated appointment of Nuno Espirito Santo last summer. Conte had initially turned down the position.

Conte also recently conducted a controversial interview with Italian media, in which he criticised the club’s recruitment during the January transfer window and suggested his squad had been ‘weakened’ following Spurs’ winter business.

Spurs are currently seven points outside the Champions League places, but have two games in hand on fourth-placed Manchester United ahead of this weekend’s trip to Leeds.

Conte walked away from his previous role at Inter Milan due to disagreements with the clubs board over their transfer plans.
