Chelsea’s trustees are ‘yet to agree’ to taking stewardship of the club following Roman Abramovich’s statement that he would be handing over Chelsea.
Abramovich released a statement at the weekend confirming that he would be handing over “stewardship” of the west Londoners to trustees of the club’s charitable foundation, following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the subsequent scrutiny the 55-year-old has faced amid alleged links to Vladimir Putin.
The Russian has been Chelsea’s owner since a billionaire takeover in 2003 and his statement – which failed to address Russia’s invasion of Ukraine – has been met with widespread criticism.
Chelsea then released a second statement on Sunday, in which the Blues described Russia’s invasion of Ukraine as ‘horrific and devastating’ and which said that ‘everyone at the club is praying for peace’.
However, Goal are reporting that Chelsea’s trustees are yet to agree to taking stewardship of the club, given their ethical concerns and both legal and regulatory issues.
Members of the charitable foundation are understood to have met on Sunday to discuss the situation surrounding the ownership.
Abramovich’s decision has been viewed as a method to avoid possible government sanctions as part of the UK’s measures against Russia.
