Dirk Kuyt has backed Erik ten Hag to ‘do a great job at any top side in Europe’ amid speculation linking the Ajax boss with Manchester United.
Ten Hag has emerged as one of the frontrunners to become Manchester United’s next permanent manager and has held initial discussions with the Red Devils regarding a move to the Premier League.
The Dutchman is believed to be on a shortlist of candidates that includes Mauricio Pochettino, Luis Enrique and Julen Lopetegui.
The 52-year-old has won two league titles at Ajax and guided the side to the Champions League semi-finals in 2018/19, with former Liverpool forward Kuyt believing Ten Hag is ready for an opportunity at ‘a top side’.
Kuyt – who won 104 caps for the Netherlands – insists his compatriot has the experience and credentials to be a huge success at one of Europe’s elite.
“Ten Hag is a great, experienced coach. He’s done his apprenticeship, if you like, with Bayern Munich’s second team, then Utrecht and now at Ajax,” he told Goal.
“He is a great manager who has improved himself so much, on and off the pitch. I know some people were doubting his level of speaking English, his performance in front of the camera, but you see him growing every week as a manager, and I think he can do a great job at any top side in Europe.
“His tactics, his way of thinking about football, is very interesting, and it would be great if he was to get an opportunity at a top side.”
