Liverpool have opened talks with Jurgen Klopp over an extension to his contract at Anfield, with the German contracted to the club until 2024.
The club’s owners are desperate to agree an extension for Klopp following his transformation of Liverpool in recent seasons, having turned the Reds one of Europe’s leading sides.
Klopp has won the Premier League and Champions League among his honours since arriving at Anfield and his team are currently in pursuit of an unprecedented quadruple of major trophies this season.
The Guardian are reporting that the president of owners Fenway Sports Group, Mike Gordon, travelled from Boston for the Champions League semi-final win over Villarreal on Wednesday with a new contract for Klopp at the top of his agenda.
Klopp had previously talked down the prospect of renewing after admitting a challenging 2020/21 season left him feeling ‘exhausted’, but spoke more positively on a new deal in March.
“If I have the energy levels for it. That is important,” Klopp said on a potential new deal.
“I love what I do but I’ve said a couple of times there must be something else out there in the world, to be honest, apart from always thinking about properly skilled, good-looking, fantastically nice football players. But I really don’t think about it.
“At the moment I am full of energy but we have to – I have to – make sure that is the case because I don’t want to sit around and be more tired than others and think: ‘Wow, why is everyone bothered about the things out there because I couldn’t care less?’”
