Arteta urges Arsenal to maintain ‘momentum’ ahead of crucial West Ham clash

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has urged his squad to make the most of their recent upturn in form ahead of Sunday’s trip to the London Stadium to face West Ham.

The Gunners push for a top four finish looked to have derailed after three consecutive losses, but they managed to turn things around by securing crucial wins over Chelsea and Manchester United last week.

Arsenal now sit in fourth in the table, two points ahead of Spurs, with the two North London clubs still to play each other again before the end of the season.

However, the Spanish coach has rebuffed suggestions that the bitter rivals are now locked in a two horse race for that coveted fourth spot and Champions League qualification.

“I don’t think so. I think there are still going to be twists and turns,” Arteta told his pre-match press conference.

Arteta’s young squad will take another huge step towards ending the season successfully if they can beat the Hammers – who lost their Europa League semi-final first leg 2-1 to Eintracht Frankfurt last night – on Sunday and the Arsenal manager wants to see his side back up the United and Chelsea wins with another crucial three points this weekend.

”We all know how difficult it is to win games in the Premier League,” Arteta said. ”We have had two really good results but it is about winning against West Ham.

”Winning consecutive games gives you a huge platform but things quickly change. We have some momentum now and want to make the most of it.”
