Man Utd hand De Jong transfer ‘ultimatum’

Manchester United want a definitive answer from Frenkie de Jong as the club consider alternative options to the Barcelona midfielder.

United are interested in a deal to sign De Jong from the Spanish side and have made contact with the player’s representatives, as Erik ten Hag looks to reunite with the former Ajax midfielder.

De Jong has reiterated his desire to remain at Barcelona this summer, though the club’s financial situation and strength in midfield means a significant offer will be considered as the Catalans look to fund their rebuild.

Sport are reporting that United are now set to hand De Jong an ‘ultimatum’ over a move to Old Trafford with the Red Devils keen to move on to alternative targets should the Dutchman turn down a transfer to the Premier League.

Ten Hag is keen to make the 25-year-old one of his first signings, with De Jong having starred under his guidance at Ajax before moving to Barcelona in a €75m deal in 2019.

Bayern Munich and PSG have also been credited with an interest, but is its United who have shown the most intent as the club look to replace the outgoing Nemanja Matic and Paul Pogba in midfield.

Ten Hag is keen to have the clubs transfer business concluded as quickly as possible as he looks to try to fix what has been a disastrous campaign, with the Red Devils squad set to return to pre-season training on June 27th.

De Jong has made 140 appearances across his three seasons at the Camp Nou, but has struggled to produce his best football on a consistent basis.
