Manchester United confirm Rangnick will not take up consultancy role

Manchester United have confirmed that Ralf Rangnick will not take up the consultancy role following the expiry of his spell as interim manager.

Rangnick was hired by Manchester United in the wake of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s sacking, the German having developed a good reputation during his time at Hoffenheim, RB Leipzig and Schalke, before moving into a Director of Football role within the Red Bull company in 2012.

During that role, the German helped develop Leipzig’s status within the Bundesliga, and oversaw their overall philosophy of playing high-intensity football and identifying promising talent, before moving into a similar role at Lokomotiv Moscow in 2020.

Rangnick’s experience saw him identified by Manchester United as the man to take over from Solskjaer on an interim basis, with the 63-year-old agreeing to move into a consultancy role at Old Trafford over the next two seasons as the club look to rebuild both on and off the pitch.

However, Rangnick has also agreed to become the new head coach of the Austrian National Team, and Manchester United have now confirmed that he will no longer take up the agreed consultancy role.

“We would like to thank Ralf Rangnick for his efforts as interim manager over the past six months,” a statement on the club website reads.

“By mutual agreement, Ralf will now focus solely on his new role as manager of the Austria national team and will not therefore be taking up a consultancy role at Old Trafford.

“We would like to wish Ralf the best of luck in this next chapter of his career.”

Speaking in his first press conference as Manchester United manager, Erik ten Hag was asked if he advocated Rangnick’s consultancy role at the club, to which the Dutchman simply said: “That is on the club.”

During his spell as interim manager, Rangnick oversaw a poor record of just 10 wins, seven draws and seven defeats in his 24 Premier League games as the club finished with a record low of 58 points and a goal difference of zero.
