Ronaldo future still ‘unclear’ but Griezmann swap talk ‘dismissed’

Cristiano Ronaldo’s future remains ‘unclear’, but talks over a swap deal involving Atletico Madrid forward Antoine Griezmann are said to have been dismissed.

Ronaldo has returned to Manchester United after being granted extended leave this summer due to ‘family reasons’, with the 37-year-old having not joined Erik ten Hag’s squad for the club’s pre-season tour of Thailand and Australia.

The Portugal captain has expressed a desire to leave the club in order to compete in the Champions League next season and Ronaldo’s agent, Jorge Mendes, has offered his services to several sides.

However, credible suitors appear minimal for the five-time Ballon d’Or winner, with the likes of Chelsea, Bayern Munich and Atletico Madrid having all ruled out a move.

Reports of a potential swap-deal involving Antoine Griezmann have been dismissed, while Atletico president Enrique Cerezo called a move for Ronaldo “practically impossible” earlier this week.

The Athletic are reporting that Ronaldo’s future is still ‘unclear’ despite talks between the forward, Mendes, and United chiefs on Tuesday, following his return to training at Carrington.

He is believed to be willing to take a pay cut in order to facilitate an exit, but a lack of genuine options has made remaining at Old Trafford an increasing likelihood.
