Guardiola keen to begin season with silverware ahead of Community Shield

Pep Guardiola wants Manchester City to begin the new season with silverware as his side take on Liverpool in the Community Shield this weekend.

The Premier League champions face the FA Cup winners in the season’s traditional curtain-raiser tomorrow, with both teams hopeful of winning further silverware before the beginning of the league campaign next week.

Summer signings Erling Haaland, Kalvin Phillips, Julian Alvarez and Stefan Ortega could all make their debuts if selected and Guardiola believes a win on Saturday would represent the perfect start to their careers with the club.

“Yeah, for us a title to win it is better, better than losing,” he said at his pre-match press conference.

“It is good for City. not just for the players. For all of us.”

The Spaniard was asked on how soon the signings will settle into his squad and says he is confident each of the new additions can make an immediate impact.

“As soon as they settle, the better. In my feeling they won’t take time. Stefan surprises us a lot in all aspects on the ball and build-up, Kalvin knows the PL perfectly. The way they settle in the few games we play, I think they will settle.

“Tomorrow we try for the first title, it’s an honour to be here, it’s a big success to be there. We know the opponent quite well, it will dictate how well our moment is after three weeks of pre-season, it’s too short. I saw many good things in this period how we played, the guys we have we move forward.”
