Six for sale as Manchester United plan defensive clear-out

Manchester United are looking to reduce their bloated defensive options with six defenders set for exits before the closure of the transfer window.

United have bolstered their backline with the additions of Lisandro Martinez and Tyrell Malacia this summer and the new arrivals have paved the way for a clear-out at Old Trafford.

According to the Daily Mail, Erik ten Hag has made six defenders surplus to requirements and exits are expected in the final weeks of the window.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Eric Bailly, Alex Telles, Axel Tuanzebe, Ethan Laird and Phil Jones are all available for transfer should offers from rival clubs arrive.

Laird is understood to be closing in on a season-long loan move to Watford, while Sevilla are said to be interested in a deal to sign Telles. The Brazilian has fallen down the pecking order following the arrival of Malacia and has failed to earn a regular role since joining from Porto in a £15.4m deal.

The club are anticipated to make substantial losses on both Bailly and Wan-Bissaka. The former signed from Villarreal in a £30m deal in 2016 but has seen his time in the Premier League plagued with injury problems.

The centre-back has interest from AC Milan, Fulham and Roma, with the latter under the management of former United boss Jose Mourinho.

Wan-Bissaka arrived with a growing reputation from Crystal Palace in 2019, but has failed to develop has hoped since his £50m move to Old Trafford. The Eagles have been linked with re-signing the right-back on loan.

Phil Jones’ 11-year career with the club also looks set to come to an end this summer and the 29-year-old has been linked with joining former teammate Wayne Rooney at MLS side DC United. Tuanzebe is also free to leave, after struggling for regular minutes during loan spells at Aston Villa and Napoli last season.
