Mikel Arteta has urged Arsenal’s players to show they ‘belong’ ahead of this weekend’s North London Derby with Tottenham.
Arsenal take on Spurs in an eagerly anticipated match-up between the capital rivals, who are separated by just a single point following strong starts to the campaign.
Arteta’s side top the division after six wins from seven games, with Spurs in third after an unbeaten start under Antonio Conte. Both sides have shown signs of progress this season, having competed directly for a place in the Champions League in 2021/22.
Speaking ahead of Saturday’s clash at the Emirates, Arteta opened up on his view of the North London rivalry and admits it is important for his players to feel a sense of belonging to the Gunners ahead of a ‘special’ clash with Spurs.
“Many things, you have to feel attached and like you belong to the club. When you have that feeling and understand the history of the derby and what has happened over the years, it makes it special,” Arteta told his pre-match press conference.
”This is a special city and a special country with very passionate fans and it is a great atmosphere.”
