Liverpool agree deal to sign Cody Gakpo

Liverpool have reached an agreement to sign Cody Gakpo from PSV Eindhoven with the forward set to travel to England for a medical.

Jurgen Klopp is close to adding another attacking option to his squad after Liverpool agreed a fee in the region of £37m for Gakpo, who has attracted interest from across Europe for his performances for club and country.

The 23-year-old was named as Dutch Footballer of the Year after scoring 21 goals in all competitions last season and has began the new season in fine form.

He has 30 goal contributions in just 24 appearances for PSV this season and scored three goals during the Netherlands’ World Cup campaign in Qatar.

Gakpo’s arrival will represent a welcome boost to Liverpool, who are short of depth in the final third with both Diogo Jota and Luiz Diaz sidelined through injury. Roberto Firmino is also out of contract at the end of the season.

Manchester United, Leeds and Southampton were all interested in a deal to sign Gakpo last summer and the former were expected to return for the Dutchman in the January window.

Gakpo – who has flourished under the management of former Manchester United forward Ruud van Nistelrooy at PSV – was understood to be open to a move to Old Trafford.

However, the BBC are reporting that United’s recruitment team were not convinced about the player’s ‘level of development’ and did not firm up their initial interest.
