Gakpo discusses his style of play after completing Liverpool transfer

Cody Gakpo has discussed his excitement and style of play after agreeing a move from PSV Eindhoven to Liverpool.

Gakpo has signed a six-year deal with the Premier League side and the transfer will officially be confirmed when the January transfer window opens next week.

His arrival adds to Liverpool’s attacking options with the Netherlands international having attracted interest from across Europe due to his performances for club and country.

The 23-year-old has 30 goal contributions in 24 appearances for PSV this season and impressed for the Dutch at the World Cup in Qatar, where he scored three goals during their run to the quarter-finals.

Gakpo – who will wear the number 18 shirt – has reacted to the move and believes Liverpool is a ‘great club’ to continue his development as a player.

“I think this is a great club for me to come in and try to show what I can [do] and try to help the team to achieve more beautiful moments that they already did in the past years,” Gakpo told the club’s official website.

“I think for me personally it’s also good to develop here and there’s a lot of great players here [who] I can learn a lot of things from.”

Gakpo’s arrival adds variety to Jurgen Klopp’s attacking options, with both Diogo Jota and Luis Diaz currently sidelined through injury. The Dutchman has featured from both the left and in a central role and discussed what he believes he can bring to the Liverpool side.

“When I played at the World Cup, I played more in the centre, so I played like a ‘false nine’, something like this – try to find my spaces to get the ball and to dribble or to move the ball forward.

“I try to be a player who goes forward and tries to make dangerous situations for the opponent and create chances, make dribbles and give assists and goals. I hope that I can bring that also to the team. What I said, I have to try to do my best for that and hopefully we can get a lot of beautiful moments.”
