Guardiola ‘delighted’ with Haaland but backs him to ‘do better’

Pep Guardiola says he is delighted with Erling Haaland but has backed the Manchester City forward to do even better.

Haaland continued his sensational debut season with two goals in City’s 3-1 win at Leeds this week, as the Norwegian reached the 20-goal mark faster than any footballer in Premier League history.

The 22-year-old has 26 goals in just 20 appearances across all competitions this season and has already broken several goalscoring records since his arrival at the Etihad last summer.

He is just four goals from eclipsing the Premier League Golden-Boot winning total from last season, while a further five goals will see Haaland break Fernando Torres’ record for the most prolific debut season from a foreign footballer.

Everton will be the next side tasked with stopping the striker this weekend and despite the staggering numbers, Guardiola believes Haaland is capable of producing even more.

“If he breaks records he’s scoring goals and helping us to win games. The team benefits, we have the benefit of this,” Guardiola told his pre-match press conference.

“Since day one we are delighted, not just the contribution of goals, but many things.

“Hopefully he can continue to improve, because I have the feeling he can do better as a football player. He’s still young, he has the mindset to do it.”
