Conor Gallagher ‘identified’ as summer target for Liverpool

Liverpool have identified Chelsea’s Conor Gallagher as a summer transfer target as Jurgen Klopp looks to rebuild his midfield.

Liverpool are expected to spend this summer as the Reds rebuild from a disappointing season, with midfield recruits the priority for Klopp and his recruitment team at Anfield.

According to the Independent, Gallagher has emerged as a potential target for Liverpool, who believe his high-energy would suit Klopp’s demands and add much-needed intensity to a midfield which has struggled this season.

Much could depend on how Chelsea’s next head coach views Gallagher, following the decision to sack Graham Potter on Sunday. The 23-year-old has made 25 league appearances since returning from a successful loan at Crystal Palace last season, but just ten of those have come from the start.

Chelsea are also under pressure to raise funds to meet Financial Fair Play rules after posting significant losses for the second successive year.

The club’s record-breaking spending across the past two transfer windows and an expected absence of Champions League football next season will increase the need for sales and Gallagher’s status as a home-grown product means any fee received would count entirely as profit.

Everton submitted a £45m bid to sign Gallagher during the January transfer window, while Newcastle have also been credited as admirers.
