Howe opens up on comparisons between Newcastle star Isak and Arsenal legend Thierry Henry

Eddie Howe has opened up on comparisons between Newcastle forward Alexander Isak and Thierry Henry.

Isak has made a major impression during his debut season at Newcastle and produced a scintillating solo run to assist Jacob Murphy during the Magpies’ 4-1 win at Everton on Thursday.

Isak signed for Newcastle in a £63m deal from Real Sociedad and has scored 10 goals in 11 Premier League starts, during an impressive first season punctuated with injury issues.

The Sweden international’s performances have earned him some considerable comparisons, with many likening the 23-year-old in style to Arsenal legend Henry.

The latter won a record four Premier League Golden Boots at Arsenal and is regarded as one of the division’s all-time greats, but Howe admits he can see similarities between the Frenchman and Isak’s game.

“I can see the comparisons there,” Howe said at his pre-match press conference ahead of Newcastle’s clash with Southampton this weekend.

“I think everyone is different. There are no two players who are the same but I think he does have some of the characteristics that Thierry Henry had.

“He has certainly got the speed and is a similar build and frame. Also the footwork. The assist [against Everton] was truly remarkable, really. He has got a lot of potential to improve and get better, but it’s been a great start for him here.”
