Aston Villa agree deal for Villarreal defender Pau Torres

Aston Villa have agreed a deal to sign Pau Torres with the club closing in on the signing of the Villarreal centre-back.

Unai Emery had made Torres his leading transfer target for the summer window having worked with the Spain international at Villarreal, with the duo having won the Europa League with the La Liga side in 2020/21.

The 26-year-old had been linked with Bayern Munich and Tottenham this summer, while Real Madrid, Manchester United and Arsenal have been credited as admirers of the defender in recent transfer windows.

Fabrizio Romano is reporting that Villa have agreed a deal worth around £35m – less than his reported release clause of around £55.5m – for Torres, who is out of contract at Villarreal next summer and keen to leave in search of a new challenge.

Torres has agreed a five-year contract at Villa Park and a medical is set to be scheduled for the defender, who has won 23 caps for Spain at international level.

The centre-back is set to become Villa’s second signing of the summer as Emery improves his squad ahead of the club’s Europa Conference League campaign, following the free transfer arrival of Youri Tielemans from Leicester City.
