Manchester United reject West Ham bid for Harry Maguire

Manchester United have reportedly rejected a bid from West Ham for Harry Maguire.

Maguire became the World’s most expensive defender when Manchester United agreed to pay Leicester City £80 million back in 2019, though has massively fallen out of favour under Erik ten Hag over the last season.

The England international started just eight Premier League games last season, and seemingly dropped to fifth-choice centre-back, with even Luke Shaw drafted in to operate as a makeshift central defender ahead of the then club captain.

Ten Hag has insisted that Maguire is still an ‘important’ member of the squad and urged him to ‘fight’ for his place, despite stripping the 30-year-old of the captaincy.

According to David Ornstein of The Athletic, Manchester United have now turned down a £20 million bid from West Ham, with David Moyes keen on the defender.

Fabrizio Romano has said that United would ‘want more’ to let their former skipper go, though Ornstein says it ‘doubtful’ that the Hammers will keep pushing given the size of the defender’s salary at Old Trafford.

The report says that there are also doubts as to Maguire’s willingness to move to the London Stadium, despite the prospect of increased amounts of first-team football.

West Ham have also shown interest in Maguire’s Manchester United teammate, Scott McTominay, with the Hammers looking to fill the void left by Declan Rice following his £105 million move to Arsenal.
