Napoli set to win race for in-demand Gabri Veiga

Napoli are set to win the race for in-demand Gabri Veiga after reaching a verbal agreement to sign the Celta Vigo midfielder.

Veiga has attracted interest from a number of Europe’s top clubs after an exciting emergence at the Spanish side last season, with the 21-year-old having scored 11 goals from central midfield in La Liga.

A host of the Premier League’s ‘Big Six’ clubs had considered moves to sign the Spain u-21 international, due to a release clause of around €40m (£34m) in his contract at Celta.

However, Napoli have now reached an agreement to sign the midfielder with Fabrizio Romano reporting that the Italian champions are closing in on a deal.

Napoli will pay a €30m fixed fee plus a further €6m add-ons for Veiga, who is set to undergo a medical with the Serie A side before completing his move to the club.

Veiga’s arrival will be a major boost for new manager Rudi Garcia, who has replaced Luciano Spalletti at Napoli after the title-winning coach decided to step down from the role.

Napoli were crowned champions in Italy for the first time since 1990 last season.
