Pochettino backs Nicolas Jackson to thrive at Chelsea

Mauricio Pochettino has backed Nicolas Jackson to thrive at Chelsea and says the forward ‘needs to build his confidence and trust.’

Jackson has made a mixed start to his career with the club and missed a glorious close range chance during the 1-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest before the international break.

The miss continued a wasteful record around goal for the 22-year-old, who leads the Premier League for big chances missed (6) so far this season.

Pochettino has called for patience with the Senegal international and has backed Jackson to impress in the Premier League, insisting it is only a ‘matter of time’ before the forward begins firing goals in English football.

“For me, the performance was good, only that he didn’t score.,” Pochettino said at his pre-match press conference ahead of this weekend’s clash with Bournemouth.

“As a striker you need to score or assist but we need to think that Jackson came from Spain, he’s young, he needs to build his confidence and trust.

“He needs to adapt to the Premier League. It’s only a matter of time but he’s doing a fantastic job for the team. He needs to be more clinical in front of goal but I think that is going to happen. No doubt he is a fantastic player.”
