Manchester United to target ‘important defender’ in 2024

Manchester United will target the signing of an ‘important defender’ in 2024 with a trio of names on the club’s centre-back shortlist.

Erik ten Hag wants to reinforce his backline with the signing of a central defender in the new year, amid doubts surrounding Harry Maguire’s future at the club and Raphael Varane’s fitness record.

United re-signed veteran defender Jonny Evans on a short-term deal during the summer, but are assessing options for the long-term and Fabrizio Romano has revealed a trio of transfer targets for the Old Trafford board.

The Red Devils remain interested in Bayer Leverkusen centre-back Edmond Tapsoba after summer interest in the Burkina Faso international, while Nice defender Jean-Clair Todibo is also on the club’s shortlist of options.

United scouts have also tracked Antonio Silva, who has emerged as one of Europe’s most promising defenders after breaking into the Benfica team last season.

The 19-year-old was named in the Primeira Liga Team of the Year as Benfica won the Portuguese title last season, while he has already earned five caps for Portugal since his senior debut 11 months ago.
