Newcastle enter race to sign Brentford’s Toney

Newcastle United have entered the race to sign Brentford’s Ivan Toney, as the forward looks to leave the west Londoners.

Toney is a transfer target for a number of the Premier League’s top teams, having informed Brentford of his desire for a new challenge.

Arsenal and Chelsea are understood to have asked to be kept informed on the conditions of a potential deal for the 27-year-old, who has scored 32 goals in 66 league appearances since Brentford’s promotion to the Premier League.

Manchester United and Spurs are also said to be admirers of Toney, who made his senior England debut in March.

iNews are reporting that Newcastle are considering a bid to re-sign Toney, who signed for the Magpies as a teenager before departing for Peterborough in 2018.

Toney made just two league appearances during his three-year spell at Newcastle, but has since developed into one of the Premier League’s most coveted forwards after leaving St James’ Park in search of first-team football.

Toney is currently suspended from football until January, after being banned for eight months for breaching the FA’s gambling rules, but has returned to first-team training at Brentford as he regains fitness.

The forward will have just 18 months remaining on his Brentford contract in January and Thomas Frank has suggested a decision on Toney’s future is out of his hands. He is valued in excess of £60m at the Bees.
