Spurs set to rival Man United for Leverkusen centre-back

Spurs are set to rival Manchester United in the race to sign Bayer Leverkusen centre-back Edmond Tapsoba.

Spurs were interested in a deal to sign Tapsoba during the summer window but were unable to agree a deal for the Burkina Faso international, who has formed part of a Leverkusen side who are impressing under Xabi Alonso and top the Bundesliga table after six games.

The 24-year-old led the Bundesliga for progressive carrying distance last season and also ranked among the leading players in Germany’s top division for progressive passes (8th), touches (5th), passes into the final third (6th) and percentage of dribblers tackled (7th).

Spurs did sign Micky van de Ven from Bundesliga side Wolfsburg during the summer, but remain keen to sign another centre-back with Eric Dier expected to leave north London and Fichajes are reporting that Tapsoba tops the list for Ange Postecoglou.

Spurs could face competition from Manchester United however, who have also tracked Tapsoba’s development in Germany.

The left-sided centre-back is on the radar of the Red Devils amid Harry Maguire’s uncertain future at Old Trafford and concerns over Raphael Varane’s fitness record.
