Chelsea are considering a move to sign Athletic Bilbao goalkeeper Unai Simon as the club target the addition of a new number one.
Chelsea remain interested in signing another goalkeeper despite the arrival of Robert Sanchez from Brighton during the summer, with the latter having had a mixed start at Stamford Bridge.
Sanchez was at fault for Arsenal’s first goal in the recent 2-2 draw with the Gunners and Chelsea remain keen to reinforce their goalkeeping options.
Spanish publication Fichajes are reporting that Simon is on the radar of the Blues’ recruitment team. The 26-year-old has impressed since progressing from the academy ranks in Bilbao and has established himself as Spain’s number one goalkeeper, earning 37 caps for La Roja.
He formed part of the Spain team that won the UEFA Nations League in June and Chelsea are weighing up a move for the shot-stopper, who is contracted at the Basque side until 2025.
Valencia’s Giorgi Mamardashvili has also been named as a potential option for Chelsea. Club scouts are understood to have watched the 23-year-old Georgian in action in La Liga this season.
Chelsea allowed Edouard Mendy and Kepa Arrizabalaga to leave the club during the summer, bringing in Sanchez and Serbia international Djordje Petrović to replace the goalkeeping duo. The latter is yet to make an appearance for the Blues, while Chelsea also have Gabriel Slonina on loan at Belgian Pro League side K.A.S. Eupen.
