Lois Openda release clause not valid until 2025

Lois Openda’s contract contains a release clause at RB Leipzig, but interested clubs will not be able to activate it until 2025.

Openda has been an instant hit since signing for Leipzig from Lens last summer, with the Belgian having scored 13 goals in 20 appearances across all competitions.

The 23-year-old produced an excellent performance during Leipzig’s Champions League clash with Manchester City this week, as the forward scored both goals in his side’s 3-2 defeat at the Etihad.

Openda’s pace and movement caused problems for Pep Guardiola’s backline and his displays this season have not gone unnoticed across Europe.

Liverpool, Manchester United and Chelsea have each been credited with interest in the forward, who scored 21 Ligue 1 goals to fire Lens to Champions League qualification last season.

Openda signed for Leipzig in a €46m club record deal last summer as the club sought a replacement for Christopher Nkunku, following his sale to Chelsea, and has impressed in the Bundesliga.

Fabrizio Romano has revealed Openda’s contract at the Red Bull Arena has a release clause of around €80m (£69.2m) included, though this will only become valid in 2025. Openda has scored twice in 12 caps for Belgium at international level.
