Former Manchester United defender John O’Shea has been appointed as manager of the Republic of Ireland on an interim basis.
The FAI have announced that O’Shea will take charge of The Boys in Green for their friendly fixtures during March’s international break, when Ireland take on Belgium and Switzerland.
O’Shea’s appointment comes after it was announced in November that Stephen Kenny would leave his role, following a disappointing qualification campaign for the 2024 European Championship.
A permanent appointment is expected to be named in April, with O’Shea to oversee March’s fixtures alongside former international teammate Paddy McCarthy.
O’Shea made 118 appearances for the Republic of Ireland during a long career with the national team, and won five Premier League titles and the Champions League among his honours at club level with Manchester United.
The 42-year-old has worked at Reading, Stoke and Birmingham City, alongside a role with the Republic of Ireland u-21 side, as a coach since retiring from the game.
