Mourinho feels he lacked support in Manchester United role

Jose Mourinho has said he lacked the support Erik ten Hag has received at Manchester United and revealed there are still players at the club he wanted out during his time at Old Trafford.

Mourinho was appointed as Manchester United manager in 2016 and spent two-and-a-half seasons in charge of the Red Devils, leading the club to a League Cup and Europa League double during his debut campaign.

However, his relationship with the club deteriorated as results declined and he was sacked in December 2018.

Mourinho is currently without a club after leaving Roma earlier this season and has been opening up on his past experiences and desire to return to management.

He reflected on his time at Manchester United and said he had a good relationship with the board, though believes he did not receive the same backing as the current man in charge.

Mourinho also questioned the rebuild of the side and said there are still players in the squad, more than five years after his exit, that he believed were not good enough.

“My relationship with [former chief executive] Ed Woodward was good,: Mourinho told The Telegraph.

“Good as in the personal point of view. Even now we send an SMS. But from a professional point of view it was not the best. I am who I am. I am a football man. Ed comes from a different background and what Ten Hag has in his time at Manchester United I didn’t have.

“I didn’t have that level of support. I didn’t have that level of trust. So I left sad, because I felt I was in the beginning of the process. In some moments, I felt if they trusted me and believed in my experience things could be different.

“There are still a couple of players still there I didn’t want five or six years ago. I think they represent a little bit what I consider not the best professional profile to a club of a certain dimension. But I did my job there. Time always tells the truth. I would love Manchester United to succeed.”
