Real Madrid vs Bayern Munich – Champions League Match Preview

Real Madrid and Bayern Munich renew rivalries in the second leg of their Champions League semi-final this evening, as two of European football’s royalty compete for a place in the final.

It’s evenly poised after a 2-2 draw in Munich last time out, with home advantage perhaps favouring the Spaniards as each team looks to book a date with Borussia Dortmund at Wembley.

Real Madrid wrapped up La Liga title success with a 3-0 win over Cadiz at the weekend, with Barcelona’s 4-2 defeat at Girona then confirming Carlo Ancelotti’s side as Spanish champions.

It’s been a brilliant domestic season for Real Madrid who have lost just once in La Liga all season, while it’s only two defeats in 49 games across all competitions in 2023/24, each at the hands of Atletico Madrid.

The last defeat for Real Madrid came in January, while it’s been 13 months since Los Blancos lost a game on home soil. After a quiet first leg performance, Jude Bellingham returned to the scoresheet at the weekend and the midfielder now has 22 goals this season. A win this evening would see Bellingham face off against former club Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League final.

Bayern Munich warmed up for the second leg with a disappointing 3-1 defeat at Stuttgart, as Thomas Tuchel’s side crashed to defeat at the MHPArena. It was a seventh league defeat of the season for Bayern, who are 15 points behind newly-crowned champions Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga table.

Tuchel must address a concerning run of away form if the Bavarians are to reach the Champions League final. Bayern have not kept a clean sheet in an away game since December 12 and an already long list of absentees was added to by Eric Dier and Raphael Guerreiro, who are doubts after picking up issues at the weekend.

Harry Kane will again be looked towards to make the difference and the 30-year-old will move level with Wayne Rooney as the leading English scorer in Champions League history with a goal at the Bernabeu.

Tuchel is also chasing his own history and could become the first coach to lead three different teams to the Champions League final, after reaching the decider with PSG (2020) and Chelsea (2021).

Vinicius Junior scored twice for Real Madrid in an entertaining first-leg draw with Bayern at the Allianz Arena.

The Brazil international got in behind Kim Min-jae to open the scoring for the visitors, though Bayern fought back to turn the game around. A scintillating run and thumping finish from Leroy Sane levelled the game on 53 minutes, before Harry Kane converted from the spot for the Germans four minutes later.

Vinicius scored his second of the night from the penalty spot to leave the tie level heading into the return, after Min-jae, who had endured a difficult evening, brought down Rodrygo in the box.
