Arteta hopes Arsenal can make more title history at Old Trafford

Mikel Arteta hopes Arsenal can create more title race history at Old Trafford ahead of facing Manchester United this weekend.

Arsenal face their old rivals in a huge Premier League fixture on Sunday, with the Gunners in need of three points to take the title race to the final weekend.

The North Londoners have history in securing big results at Manchester United in title run-ins, including a famous Marc Overmars winner on route to the Premier League in 1997/98, and Sylvain Wiltord’s winner to clinch the title at Old Trafford four years later.

Asked at his pre-match press conference whether his team can take inspiration from past achievements, Arteta said: “Every game has a different context. We know our history [at Old Trafford] how we have done over there, so we are going to have to be at our best to win the game.

“We know what we need to do, but first we have to perform at a high level to deserve to win the match. That is where the focus is.”

Arsenal are a point above Manchester City in the title race, though have played a game more. Arteta admits the destination of the Premier League is not in their control, and urged Arsenal to focus only on themselves.

“It leaves us in a very clear situation. We have to focus and do what have to do to be in the best possible situation. That’s what we are doing. We have to think that it is going to work and we can be better than our opponent and beat them.

“The final outcome might be something else, but that is not in our control.”
