Mauricio Pochettino has discussed the difference between the record-breaking spend overseen at Chelsea, in comparison to former club Tottenham.
Chelsea’s spending has moved past £1 billion since Todd Boehly’s takeover of the club last year, following the £42.5m deadline day arrival of Cole Palmer from Manchester City.
Chelsea have now spent £419m this summer alone, more than Pochettino spent in 11 transfer windows in charge of London rivals Tottenham (£412m).
Ahead of this weekend’s fixture with Nottingham Forest, Pochettino was asked for his view on Chelsea’s lavish summer spree.
“I think we need to explain the realities. In the same way we sign, we sell players. It is not fair to say anything wrong about my former club, it is more about net spend than the money you spend,” he told his pre-match press conference.
“That is the balance the club tries to get. I think it was a different project, different circumstance. We feel comfortable of course, we need to settle all of the players.
“We need to recover the injured players and those that arrived late. It is a matter of time and we have the quality and I think we are going to perform.”
One player who has come through Chelsea’s ranks to earn a chance is Levi Colwill, who was this week called up for England’s senior side for the first time. Pochettino is delighted for the 20-year-old and called Colwill a ‘big talent’.
“Levi, is a player that is performing really well last season in the u21 Euros and has started the season well.
“He is a big talent, can play in different positions. Great character, he is a great player, I am happy for him and of course, hoping the next international break we have more players involved.”
