Leverkusen ‘expect’ Jeremie Frimpong exit in 2024

Bayer Leverkusen expect Jeremie Frimpong to leave the club next year as Europe’s top teams monitor the wing-back.

Frimpong has starred during Leverkusen’s spectacular start to the season under Xabi Alonso, with the 22-year-old having scored six goals and provided seven assists in 17 appearances in all competitions for the German side.

The wing-back was named in the Bundesliga Team of the Season in 2022/23 and has impressed since signing for Leverkusen from Celtic, where the defender won a Scottish treble in 2019/20.

Frimpong has broken into the Netherlands national set up and made his debut for the Dutch in October, with Leverkusen braced for bids as a number of Europe’s leading clubs track his performances.

Manchester United and Chelsea have been linked with the ex-Manchester City academy graduate, while Barcelona and Bayern Munich are also reported admirers.

Sky Germany are reporting that Leverkusen are expecting Frimpong to leave the club in 2024 and the defender has a release clause of €40m (£34.6m) that will become valid at the end of the season.

Frimpong is open to an exit from the German league leaders despite their superb form this season. Leverkusen lead Bayern Munich in the title race after winning 11 of their opening 12 league games. Alonso’s side are unbeaten in 18 games in all competitions, only failing to win in a 2-2 draw at Bayern in September.
