Liverpool’s Konate facing spell out with hamstring injury

Ibrahima Konate could miss Liverpool’s Champions League clash with Real Madrid next month with the defender facing a spell on the sidelines.

Konate has picked up a hamstring injury and is expected to miss up to three weeks of action, adding to Jurgen Klopp’s problems as he looks to turn around the club’s fortunes this season.

Liverpool have won just once in six games since the turn of the New Year and are ten points adrift of the Champions League places. The Reds crashed out of the FA Cup at the weekend after a late defeat at Brighton and face an uphill task to salvage their season.

Konate’s absence adds to the injury problems at Anfield, with Klopp already without Virgil van Dijk at centre-back. Further forward, Diogo Jota, Roberto Firmino and Luis Diaz have also been sidelined during a difficult period for the Merseyside club.

Klopp confirmed last week that Van Dijk, Firmino and Jota were a ‘couple of weeks’ from returning to training, though Diaz is facing a longer spell out.

The Times are reporting that Konate faces three weeks out and will miss Premier League clashes with Wolves, Everton and Newcastle. He is a major doubt for the club’s Champions League last-16 first leg against Real Madrid which will take place at Anfield on February 21.

Joe Gomez and Joel Matip will be expected to replace Konate at centre-back, while Nathaniel Phillips is also an option. Liverpool last week recalled centre-back Rhys Williams from a loan spell at Blackpool.
