Spurs to hand Conte £150m ‘war chest’

Tottenham are set to hand Antonio Conte a £150m ‘war chest’ as the club close in on naming the Italian as their new manager.

Conte is expected to be named as Spurs’ new manager following talks with the North London side, with the former Chelsea boss set for a Premier League return as Nuno Espirito Santo’s successor.

Talks are understood to be at an ‘advanced stage’ with Conte set to sign an 18-month deal at the club, after Spurs’ decision to sack Nuno on Monday following a concerning run of recent results and performances, losing five of their past seven Premier League fixtures.

Conte rejected the chance to take charge at Spurs during the summer due to reservations over the club’s ambition, but the Sun are reporting that the 52-year-old has now reversed that decision after being promised significant backing.

Spurs will hand Conte a transfer ‘war chest’ of £150m to strengthen the squad as Daniel Levy desperately seeks to revive the club’s fortunes following the failed tenure of Nuno.

The Portuguese coach was sacked after last weekend’s 3-0 defeat to Manchester United and just 10 league fixtures in charge, the shortest managerial spell of any Spurs manager in the Premier League era.

Just last week, Conte was himself being linked with taking over at Old Trafford with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer having come under pressure due to United’s poor run of form.

Conte has been without a club since leaving Inter Milan last summer, having guided the Serie A side to a drought-breaking Scudetto during the 2020/21 campaign.
