Tuchel urges Christensen to pen new deal after suggesting weeks ago deal was close

Thomas Tuchel has urged Andreas Christensen to sign a new deal at Chelsea as contract talks with the defender continue.

Christensen’s current deal is set to expire at the end of the season and Tuchel had previously suggested that an agreement was close with the Denmark defender, but weeks after the German’s initial comments there has been no announcement over an extension.

The centre-back will be free to negotiate a pre-contract agreement with foreign sides from January, and Tuchel has urged Christensen to end speculation over his future and put pen to paper with the west Londoners.

“We have the hope that it (Christensen’s lack of action) influences the contract situation a little bit,” said Tuchel.

“My understanding weeks ago was that Andreas wants the same as me and the club. But we have been waiting a long time for confirmation.

“How he acts on the pitch, he needs to act now off the pitch and walk the talk. He tells us he loves Chelsea and he wants to stay. He is a big part of a big club. We want the commitment.”

Tuchel had spoken on the situation two weeks ago and commented that ‘good news’ was expected ‘in the next few days’, though there has since been no public progress on Christensen’s new contract.

“I expect some good news in the next days,” Tuchel said.

“The situations are handled professionally from all sides, very calmly. During the process, we can produce the performances we need, and that’s the most important thing.”
