Real Madrid ‘considering’ Werner

Real Madrid are said to be ‘considering’ a move to sign Timo Werner from Chelsea as the club look to provide cover for Karim Benzema.

Werner has been linked with an exit from Chelsea this summer after revealing his frustration with his role under Thomas Tuchel. The Germany international has struggled to cement a regular role in the side and made just 15 league starts for the west Londoners in 2021/22.

DefensaCentral are reporting that Real Madrid are considering a move to sign Werner as the European champions look for competition and cover at centre-forward.

Benzema remains the club’s leading light and scored a career-best 44 goals in all competitions last season as Los Blancos won a Champions League and La Liga double, but there is a lack of depth behind the Ballon d’Or favourite with Eden Hazard having been tried in a false nine position during pre-season.

Werner’s ability to feature across the frontline makes the German an attractive option, though Real would only consider a loan move for the forward who has also been linked with Newcastle and Juventus.

The 26-year-old has struggled for goals since moving to the Premier League, but managed 34 in all competitions during a prolific final season at RB Leipzig in 2019/20.

Werner’s potential arrival is understood to be dependent on exits however, with the likes of Mariano, Marcos Asensio and Dani Ceballos among those linked with an exit from the Bernabeu.
