Van Dijk backs Slot for success at Liverpool ahead of potential appointment

Virgil van Dijk has backed Arne Slot to be a success at Liverpool if his compatriot is appointed as Jurgen Klopp’s successor.

Liverpool have agreed terms with Slot to become their next manager and are currently negotiating with Feyenoord over a compensation package for their highly-rated head coach.

After impressing at AZ Alkmaar with the highest points-per-game record in the club’s history, Slot moved to Feyenoord and led the Rotterdam outfit to a first Eredivisie title in six years last season.

The 45-year-old had earlier guided Feyenoord to the Europa Conference League final in his debut campaign and delivered KNVB Cup success earlier this month.

As the rumours around Slot’s potential arrival at Anfield intensify, Liverpool captain Van Dijk was asked for his opinion on his compatriot and has backed him to succeed in English football if a deal is agreed.

“I find it hard to answer of course, but I think Arne Slot is perhaps one of the better Dutch coaches at this moment,” Van Dijk told Viaplay, after Liverpool’s 2-0 defeat at Everton on Wednesday.

“I think the way of playing and the philosophy he has, that he could be a Liverpool coach.

“Only I think from what I read and hear is that it’s still far from being completed. We shall see.”
