Joao Cancelo set for loan move to Bayern Munich

Bayern Munich are closing in on a deal to sign Joao Cancelo on loan from Manchester City.

Cancelo has fallen out of favour at Manchester City and has started each of the club’s last three fixtures on the bench, with teenager Rico Lewis, Kyle Walker and Nathan Ake preferred in the full-back positions in recent weeks.

The Portugal international has been a central part of the club’s modern success and has been named in the PFA Team of the Year in each of the past two campaigns, but is now closing in on an exit with The Athletic reporting that Cancelo is set to sign on loan for Bayern Munich.

The deal is understood to include an option to make the move permanent for a fee of around €70m (£61.5m), as Bayern Munich look to strengthen their squad for their Bundesliga and Champions League campaigns.

Bayern are without summer signing Noussair Mazraoui through injury at present, while Benjamin Pavard has been linked with an exit at the end of the season.

Julian Nagelsmann’s side are top of the Bundesliga, but have allowed the chasing pack to close the gap after a run of three consecutive draws. Bayern will also take on Paris Saint-Germain in a huge Champions League last-16 tie next month.
