Graham Potter has called on Chelsea to ‘attack the second half of the season’ following the club’s January business.
Chelsea were the big spenders of the winter window after investing more than £280m into the squad, with the club’s business including the £88.5m capture of Mykhaylo Mudryk from Shakhtar Donetsk and the British transfer record £106.8m signing of Benfica’s Enzo Fernandez.
It continued an incredible spend since Todd Boehly took ownership in west London with the American having provided Potter with substantial backing.
Potter has discussed the Blues’ recruitment drive and the balancing act of moulding his new squad, as Chelsea look to improve from a disappointing start to the season.
Chelsea are tenth in the Premier League table and ten points adrift of the Champions League places. Speaking ahead of Friday’s clash with Fulham, Potter discussed the structure of his squad and challenged Chelsea to find form across the remainder of the campaign.
“It’s the combination of a few things,” he told his pre-match press conference.
“There is a youthful dynamic and you can see the type of player we’ve tried to sign. We are trying to build something for now and the future; it is about helping those who are here now as well.
“We’ve had a pretty unprecedented injury situation; lots of things have happened. We’ve learnt a lot and we can attack the second half of the season.”
Chelsea made eight signings during the winter but are only allowed to register a maximum of three new players for Champions League’s knockout stages.
Mal Gusto is remaining on loan at Lyon, while Andrey Santos is awaiting a work permit. However, Potter must make a decision on the six other new arrivals – Fernandez, Mudryk, Joao Felix, Benoit Badiashile, Noni Madueke and David Datro Fofana – before the club meet Borussia Dortmund later this month.
