Ten Hag discusses Rashford progress and praises forward’s ‘mentality’

Erik ten Hag has discussed Marcus Rashford’s progress this season and has praised the Manchester United forward’s mentality.

Rashford continued his rich vein of form with the winning goal as Manchester United beat Real Betis 1-0 to reach the Europa League quarter-finals on Thursday evening.

The 25-year-old has been in explosive form since returning from the World Cup, having scored ten goals in his last 12 league appearances for the Red Devils.

The England international is also the leading scorer in the Europa League this season with six goals and has 30 goals in 48 appearances for club and country so far this season.

Ten Hag has opened up on the forward’s form and believes Rashford’s ‘attitude and mentality’ are behind his improvement this season.

“He has progressed during the season,” Ten Hag said at his pre-match press conference ahead of United’s FA Cup quarter-final with Fulham.

“He was not in the best shape when he started the season, but the way we’re playing gives him a base and he brings his skills in to that.

“His attitude and mentality is what is bringing him a lot of progress and brings the team a lot of joy and gives him a lot of goals and us a lot of wins.

“I knew his skills. You also bring staff in around him, who can make him better and make progress.

“Don’t forget others in the staff because it is about teamwork. The staff is about balance, they challenge each other and it is the total package and it is not about one person.”

United claimed the first silverware of the season with League Cup success last month to end a six-year barren run without a major trophy.

Ten Hag’s side are now into the quarter-finals of both the FA Cup and Europa League, with the Dutchman outlining his determination to bring back a winning culture to Old Trafford.

“We have to set a winning culture,” he said.

“We are Manchester United, we have to win all the games we have to compete in all the leagues, that is the mentality.

“The mentality is when you go into a game you have to win it.”
