Xavi warns Gavi he wouldn’t be ‘happy’ leaving Barcelona

Xavi has warned that Gavi would not be ‘happy’ at a different club, amid interest in the Barcelona midfielder from Chelsea.

Gavi’s future at Barcelona is uncertain amid a contract dispute between the Catalans and La Liga. Barcelona have been unable to register Gavi as a senior player due to the club’s economic issues, leading to the prospect of the teenager leaving on a free transfer this summer.

Barcelona did agree a new contract with Gavi worth €8m a season and handed the La Masia graduate the club’s number six shirt, but a court then ruled in favour of La Liga who insist Barcelona cannot register new players amid their current financial situation.

Chelsea have been credited with an interest in signing the 18-year-old and are reported to be preparing a significant financial package to sign Gavi this summer. The Spain international is regarded as one of world football’s best young talents and was named as winner of the Golden Boy award in 2022.

However, Barcelona manager Xavi has warned Gavi against leaving the Spanish side and believes the teenager ‘has everything’ he needs to succeed at the Camp Nou.

“I don’t think Gavi would be happy at a different club,” Xavi said at his pre-match press conference ahead of Barca’s away trip to Getafe today.

“He has everything here at 18 and is an important player for the team. I think his future is here at the club.”
