Bajcetic opens up on new look Liverpool midfield and competition for places

Stefan Bajcetic has opened up on a new look Liverpool midfield this season and the competition for places in the squad.

Jurgen Klopp oversaw an overhaul of his engine room during the summer transfer window, with Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, Wataru Endo and Ryan Gravenberch arriving as midfield recruits.

The mass change came after experienced stars in Jordan Henderson, James Milner and Fabinho were among those to depart, with teenager Bajcetic believing the Reds’ recruits can improve the team.

“Alexis we knew the most because he had already played in the Premier League with Brighton and I have played against him,” the Spaniard told the club’s official website.

“It is really easy to adapt to playing with players like him and Dom, who is really good. They have given us a boost, for sure, and this is the highest level of football so you can always learn from the others, especially in my position in the midfield.

“Players like Thiago always try to help me and every day I feel like I’m learning something different. At my age you need to get more experience and I get that here, especially training with these players.

“I learn a bit every day and even when you’re off the pitch you can still learn things. You mature as a person and that is important as well.”

Bajcetic made 19 appearances during a breakthrough season last term, but has missed the start of the new campaign as he recovers from injury. The 18-year-old is back in training and unfazed by the increased competition for a place, as he looks to cement a role in the team.

“At a club like Liverpool you need to always fight for your position,” Bajcetic said. “It is never guaranteed.

“Anyone can play in any position, but I know that if I do my job and I push as hard as I can, I will have more chances to play and maybe not just at six. I played left midfield a little bit last season and I just adapt to what the coach says.

“I’m happy to play anywhere. If the coach put me at striker I’d do it.”
