‘Cold’ Palmer promises ‘it’s just the start’ after stunning Chelsea impact

Cole Palmer hopes to “show more” after enjoying an excellent start to life at Chelsea since leaving Manchester City in the summer.

The 21-year-old grabbed a brace and provided an assist for Noni Madueke as the Blues beat Luton Town 3-2 at Kenilworth Road on Saturday.

That takes his tally for the season so far to eight goals and four assists in the Premier League, making him just the fifth Chelsea player to reach ten goal involvements in a single campaign while 21 or younger.

The youngster’s second finish was particularly impressive as he showed great composure and control to beat goalkeeper Thomas Kaminski.

“Just when I took it round the ‘keeper I thought the other guy was going to come across and I just waited a second and finished,” Palmer told TNT Sports after the final whistle.

He continued: “Hopefully it is just the start. I have adapted to a new life, new teammates and the city. Hopefully I can show more on the pitch as well.”

Madueke praised his teammate’s performance, saying: “That’s why they call him ‘Cold Palmer’, isn’t it!”

The Londoner says he and Palmer have already developed a close understanding on the pitch. “Cole gave it to me, he knows my game and it was a double-team most of the time I had the ball. I just thought I’d shift it onto my left and hit it, and luckily it went in the top corner,” he said.

Chelsea end 2023 on a high note after enduring a tough year, but Madueke is hopeful for the future.

“I think we take it one step at a time,” he said. “I spoke after the Palace game about consistency. Two wins on the bounce gives us confidence. I think if we do that, we will be right in the mix come the end of the season.”
