Guardiola welcomes De Bruyne return after lengthy injury layoff

Pep Guardiola says Kevin De Bruyne could play for Manchester City against Newcastle United after recovering from a serious injury.

The Belgian midfielder was on the bench for Saturday’s 2-0 win over Sheffield United at the Etihad.

It’s the first time the 32-year-old has been included in a matchday squad since injuring his hamstring on the opening day of the Premier League campaign.

Before kick-off Guardiola said that De Bruyne would not be ready to play in the game, but afterwards he suggested he could return to the pitch in two weeks’ time when they face the Magpies.

“Really good – we’ve been waiting a long time for him,” Guardiola told Sky Sports. “He’s turning good the last week or so.

“He came for the trophies today for the picture and to be here and realise when to warm up and how the people support him and look forward to seeing him again. Maybe Newcastle he will be ready.”

Man City dominated the Blades at home as Phil Foden set up Rodri and Julian Alvarez for both goals in a 2-0 win.

Guardiola’s side host Huddersfield Town in the third round of the FA Cup next Sunday before returning to Premier League action on January 13, when they travel to St James’ Park.
