Liverpool ‘contact’ transfer guru Edwards over shock return to Anfield

Liverpool have reportedly ‘made contact’ with Michael Edwards about a sensational return to the club.

The 45-year-old left the Merseyside outfit in 2022 after spending 11 years at Anfield. He was appointed sporting director in 2016, shortly after Jurgen Klopp arrived, and is widely credited or the club’s success in the transfer market over the past decade.

Following Klopp’s decision to step away from Liverpool at the end of the season, the club’s owners, Fenway Sports Group (FSG), want to bring Edwards back, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Edwards was reportedly offered the chance to restructure the club behind the scenes, but has apparently rejected the proposal “as he’s not interested even in a more senior role as of today”.

Julian Ward succeeded Edwards as sporting director in 2022, but left the role last year. Jorg Schmadtke took Ward’s place, but is set to leave at the end of the January transfer window, leaving the role vacant.

Edwards is currently working as a consultant for Ludonautics, a sports advisory business founded in 2023 by former Liverpool director of research Ian Graham.
